The new Spiritborn class introduced in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred expansion has left an inerasable impression among players with its unprecedented versatility and overwhelming power.
But it is destined to be another stepping stone for a better ARPG experience in the future. As Diablo 4 progresses, there may be more expansion packs and more new professions introduced one after another. But it may also introduce subclasses like Path of Exile.
After all, if it is not a completely innovative class, there is no need to introduce it as a separate class, which will only increase the similarity between characters. And players will become more and more entangled in class selection.
If future expansion chooses to introduce a new class, then it is likely to be Holy Knight Class. If the subclasses mechanism is chosen, it is recommended that Diablo 4 learn from Path of Exile.
Holy Knight Class Would Complement Storylines
Developing core classes innovatively is the primary task that game developers seeks for. Thankfully, Diablo 4 has a lot of potential for character development in the future. But in terms of the immediate future and the next expansion, there is already a clear path to serve as the complementary storyline of later series, and that is Holy Knight.
Vessel of Hatred concludes with Akarat’s mortal body being corrupted by Mephisto and becomes his new vessel, which has invited divisive discussion because of its open-ended and anticlimactic plot. Despite this, the overall storyline development remains clear.
The end signifies the downfall of the light and sets the theme of next expansion. The next expansion is destined to present a world indulged in doom and hopelessness. And Vessel of Hatred DLC hints at the return of Tyrael, which means a lot to the next class.
Diablo 4 features the lack of representative “sword and board” class. And Holy Knight fits the bill very well. In the previous games, Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, Holy Knight appeared in a similar capacity, such as Paladin class and Crusader class. This provided a source of inspiration for Diablo 4, and it only needed to be redesigned according to the current standards of new classes.
If Holy Knight class is really introduced in the future, it will share more versatilities and specialities than Spiritborn.
Path Of Exile Offers A Recipe For Subclasses
Given the class balance problem of the game, introducing new classes will inevitably lead to the decline of old classes, although adding new active and passive skills to them to improve their arsenals will not help. And it can be demonstrated by the popularity of Spiritborn in Vessel of Hatred.
Vessel of Hatred expansion has also offered powerful items that are exclusive to Spiritborn, which can be traded with Diablo 4 Gold, and it undoubtably enhance its ability to the next stage.
So it is reasonable to perform subclasses in further expansion to achieve the balance of classes. Rather than overshadowing all other classes like Spiritborn did.
But it isn’t a simple task. The change of design concept is typically requires much of time and effort. Still, Path of Exile serves as a ready-made reference template for Diablo 4. The system called Ascendancy supports Path of Exile three specializations for every base class.
7 base classes and 19 Ascendancy classes grant Path of Exile various build diversity. Each subclass is targeted at providing new and diverse enhancements for its base class. This model enhances the three-dimensionality of the class, which is exactly what Vessel of Hatred DLC lacks.
But for Diablo 4, it is difficult to innovate new classes based on the existing six classes. So introducing subclasses is indeed a fun and feasible decision. Improving and adjusting the original class is also an effective way to attract players.
Spiritborn Class Is Too Powerful
Spiritborn are available to cast incredible skills which can be simply combined regardless of the type of Spirit Hall. Quill Volley skill is extremely powerful for clearing enemies and dealing tremendous damage to slay bosses. The “shotgun” skills basically make it invincible, not to mention those newly added Diablo 4 Items that are aimed at enhancing the performance of this new class further.
This undoubtedly exposes the imbalance of class performance. Taking Spectral Throw in Path of Exile as a reference, Quill Volley Spiritborn builds that dominate the endgame list and are destined to be nerfed, just like what Path of Exile did to Spectral Throw.
Whether it is a reduction in the damage, or a degradation to the entire class mechanism, this skill will not be retained for long.
Regardless of whether a new class is introduced, or a subclass is created, some of Spiritborn’s skills are bound to be weakened, unless Diablo 4 intends to make the other 5 classes trapped in a nameless state consistently.
