Today I want to talk about something I’d rather not discuss, but I have to. Diablo 4 Season 9 is experiencing a massive Tempering exploit.
Recently, veteran players have shared some disturbing screenshots on the forums, seeking support. These screenshots show item sets exploiting Season 9’s Tempering abilities and systems, which is seriously disrupting game balance.
Tempering Exploit Is Shattering Game Balance
It’s important to emphasize that this issue is unrelated to the tempering bug in Season 6. In Season 6, players exploited Necromancer’s Spiked Armor to temper, causing it to copy other Tempering effects and then Masterworking them simultaneously, resulting in a massive power bonus.
The tempering effects in Diablo 4 Season 9 are even more insane. Looking back at the Season 9 PTR, there were also some Masterworking bugs.
Watching some bloggers’ livestreams during Season 9 PTR, you can see that they triggered Masterworking effects multiple times, which was clearly a serious exploit. Thankfully, the official team eventually addressed it.
But this time, we’re dealing with the Tempering exploit. This exploit allows players to have multiple Tempering effects in the same category, resulting in a huge and unfair power advantage.
A closer look at the items created by these exploits reveals that they far exceed the official design range. Multiple maxed-out or problematic affixes are stacked on a single item, which is simply not a result of normal RNG.
Leaderboards Are Being Abused
Some may wonder, what does this have to do with Leaderboards? Because players using these exploited items can abuse Leaderboards to dominate Pit Speedruns, gain an unfair power advantage by farming Paragon faster, and completely bypass the intended difficulty curve.
Yet, the official team has not taken any action, which is truly worrying. After all, Diablo 4 plans to launch official in-game Leaderboards in the near future. If these exploits persist, the competition on the leaderboards will be anything but fair.
Imagine competing on the leaderboards against players who possess multiple Tempering effects from the same class. They breeze through the ranks, while you struggle to catch up with Diablo 4 gold accumulated through regular gameplay. This is utterly unfair to serious players.
Currently, this exploit only affects Sorcerer, and Spiritborn classes, based on our current knowledge. I’m not writing this to stir up trouble, but I completely agree with the previous player: this is an issue that needs to be reported urgently.
Otherwise, the future of Diablo 4 Season 9 is in jeopardy. A better system must be implemented to detect these exploits. For now, the only solution I can think of is requiring players to reveal their equipment without leaving the Pit.
As everyone knows, the game now has unofficial leaderboards. At the end of the Pit, players will be required to display their exact equipment builds, which will at least allow us to see if there are instances of backfire exploits.
If the official team wants competitive content like Pit and Leaderboards to function effectively, these types of exploits must be addressed promptly and transparently.
Players love this game and have invested a tremendous amount of time, energy, and passion in it. We sincerely hope that the official team will fulfill their responsibilities and resolve this issue.
