Diablo 4 has unveiled its first 12-minute gameplay demo for the second expansion, Lord of Hatred, offering players an early look at the opening moments of the new content. This strategic preview has already drawn considerable attention from the community.
The initial five-minute gameplay CG released by IGN revealed Mephisto's evil and power, and this newly released gameplay demo further confirms this. Our class-Paladin-is key to combating the dark and evil forces. I will now use this video to introduce you to everything you know about Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred.

As the cutscene The Queen and the Saint, which foreshadows Mephisto's plot, concludes, the real battle begins-you and your companion Lorath embark on a ship bound for Skovos Islands, shouldering the responsibility of stopping Daedric Prince Mephisto from spreading his hatred towards Sanctuary.
However, this journey is far more perilous than anticipated. As the situation rapidly deteriorates, the ship is attacked, and chaos instantly engulfs the deck. With Lorath's tense and immersive narration throughout, you'll control a level 20 Paladin, engaging in a desperate battle against wave after wave of enemies on a cramped deck.
Finally, this thrilling naval melee culminates in a climactic boss fight: Hateborn Abomination, a deadly monster mutated from a cult follower, becomes your final trial before reaching the new area.
Skovos Islands
Skovos Islands are a chain of islands in Twin Seas, located at the southern end of Sanctuary. It consists of four main islands and several smaller islands, located slightly west of Nahantu.
The entire map is guided by Greek aesthetics, and its backstory is as mysterious as legend: Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, stole Worldstone and, together with her lover, the angel Inarius, created Sanctuary and Nephalem, and humans are the descendants of Nephalem.
Skovos Islands are the oldest cradle of civilization in Sanctuary, the original home of Lilith and Inarius, and thus considered the cradle of human civilization.
In the expansion, we first set foot on Skovos Islands as Paladins. Lord of Hatred, Mephisto, lurks there, and later in the story, we may even have to team up with Lilith, the boss we defeated in Diablo 4 Season 12, to fight Mephisto.
Paladin
Paladin is a brand new class, available to any player who pre-ordered Lord of Hatred expansion. Its class design revolves around four distinct Oaths, each defining a unique combat style and gameplay depth.
Zealot Oath prioritizes extreme attack speed and critical hits, relying on his signature Zeal skill for high-frequency combos, reminiscent of the classic Zeal Paladin;
Juggernaut Oath transforms into an immortal steel fortress, focusing on defensive skills like Shield Slam, Shield Charge, and Condemn, maximizing survivability and becoming the team's most reliable tank;
Judicator Oath excels at applying and detonating Judgement marks, unleashing devastating area-of-effect holy damage centered around Blessed Hammer, perfectly inheriting the essence of Blessed Hammer gameplay;
The most unique Disciple Oath allows you to transform into an angelic Arbiter form, automatically clearing surrounding enemies with Wing Strike while maintaining extremely high mobility.
Equipment
In terms of equipment and systems, Paladins receive their exclusive weapon type, Flail.
Its construction is deeply integrated with the expansion's new systems-Horadric Cube can be used to refine perfect affixes, Skill Tree Revamp allows for skill variants across oaths, and Talisman System further strengthens the core advantages of the oath-based build through set bonuses.
Early testing data shows that Paladin's overall strength is impressive. For example, Divine Judgment, with identical Diablo 4 Items, can deal up to three times the damage of a Wizard's single hit, while also inflicting stun and damage reduction, fully demonstrating its powerful offensive and defensive potential.
Whether acting as a tank or an aura support core in a raid, Paladins can fulfill key roles thanks to their flexible oath choices.
Skill System
Paladin's entire skill system is a fusion of Diablo 2 and Diablo 3.
Basic skills like Brandish and Holy Bolt are used to accumulate resources. Core skills, besides Zeal and Blessed Hammer, include Blessed Shield, Shield Bash, and Holy Lance. Auras (Fanaticism Aura, Defiance Aura, Holy Light Aura) provide attack speed, defense, or elemental damage bonuses to the user and allies.
Ultimate skills include Heaven's Fury (summoning beams of light), Condemn (gathering and detonating enemies), Judgement (applying marks), and Disciple-exclusive Arbiter transformation.
Based on these skills, four main playstyles emerge in the endgame:
- Zeal Paladin relies on extremely high attack speed for high-frequency attacks;
- Judgement Paladin gathers enemies with Condemn and then instantly clears them with Judgment or Heaven's Fury;
- Arbiter Paladin aims for 100% permanent Arbiter form, achieving high-speed map traversal and automatic enemy killing;
- Auradin maximizes the range and damage of Holy Light Auras, even achieving AFK monster farming.
Beyond the content shown in this 12-minute gameplay demo, Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred offers even more difficult tiers, a wider arsenal of weapons, additional boss encounters, and the full, unrelenting menace of Mephisto. With the expansion set to launch on April 28th, this guide will help you thoroughly prepare to confront the Lord of Hatred, vanquish the darkness, and cleanse the land of evil once and for all.
