It's been a week since the official launch of Trial of the Ancestors in Path of Exile 1, and player opinions are polarized. Some players find TotA very interesting, while others find it too tedious and offers little reward.
Both viewpoints have merit. TotA is inherently a strategic combat mechanic with low early-game rewards, requiring more time and resources than typical monster-grinding gameplay. Its unique reward system also makes it a game that demands a long-term commitment.
Trial of the Ancestors will end on July 16th, leaving two weeks to play. To ensure you don't miss out on this special mechanic, check out this super-easy guide I've shared.

Gameplay Overview
1. Match Mechanics
In PoE TotA, defeating enemies doesn't directly win the match; completely destroying all of the enemy team's Ancestor Totems is the only way to win. There are two special mechanics during the tournament:
- Unlimited respawns
- 5-second stun
Furthermore, a complete tournament consists of multiple rounds. You have one chance to recover from a loss in each round; you are eliminated only after losing two consecutive matches.
Each winning a match rewards you with specific clan reputation points, which can be used to exchange with the corresponding chieftain for more powerful units, exclusive equipment, or consumables used in the tournament.
2. Entry Tickets
Silver Coins, dropped in Path of Exile Atlas maps, are the only entry tickets to the tournament. One Coin is consumed per match. You can obtain them by farming the map or trading them on the market; currently, the price is not high.
3. Gameplay
Before the match, you can view the enemy's formation and allocate recruited warriors on your own board (up to 16 slots). There are four main roles:
- Attacker
- Escort
- Defender
- Flanker
The formation strategy is similar to a tower defense game; you need to use your units to protect yourself and destroy the enemy's Ancestor Totems.
4. Reward Mechanism
TotA's reward structure is one of its core attractions, primarily including:
- PoE Currency
- Divination Cards
- Unique Items
Tattoos, in particular, can be directly socketed into Passive Tree to enhance or replace existing passive effects. They are absolutely crucial for maximizing character attributes in the late game of Path of Exile. Some high-value tattoos can fetch the price of multiple Divine Orbs on the market.
Stage Evolution
Some players believe TotA's rewards are low because the early-game rewards are limited, requiring many matches and significant time investment. Therefore, this period focuses on familiarizing oneself with the gameplay and mechanics, accumulating initial resources to acquire stronger minions in the mid-to-late game.
In the mid-to-late game, the quality of TotA's rewards significantly improves, with not only high-value tattoos but also more Unique Items appearing. However, don't be complacent; high rewards also mean high risks. You'll need to pay even more attention to formation planning and building dedicated TotA characters.
TotA Class Building
In the late-game Trial of the Ancestors environment of Path of Exile, the mainstream gameplay gradually evolved into a ZDPS-centric system.
The key idea behind this build is not to rely on the character's own damage output to kill enemies, but to minimize or abandon damage attributes and invest all resources in improving control, survivability, and battlefield disruption capabilities.
ZDPS primarily restricts enemy movement through slowing, knockback, and stun, while coordinating with the team's overall push rhythm to maintain stable control in high-score, high-intensity matches.
Compared to traditional damage-dealing builds, this build is safer against high-level enemies, more suitable for sustained, stable pushes, and more efficient at achieving tactical objectives centered on capturing points and pushing totems.
1. Defensive Core
When stealing enemy totems, as long as you are not hit by the enemy, you will not trigger the 5-second penalty stun. Therefore, we need to maximize evasion and block.
- Evasion Rating: 95%.
- Spell Suppression: 100%.
- Block & Spell Block: Maximize both to 75% through passives and shields.
2. Core Items
Shield
Acrobatics or Kiloava's Bluster Shield, greatly increasing your block rate.
Boots
Omeyocan, providing extremely high dodge chance.
Potions
Bind on Progenesis or Rock Armor Potion, Mist Potion, ensuring you won't be instantly killed if accidentally hit.
3. Passives and Class Choices
Runebinder and Acrobatics
Runebinder is suitable for ranged attacks, while Acrobatics converts your spell suppression rate into spell dodge rate, enhancing survivability.
Raider and Trickster
Raiders have extremely high base dodge and high movement speed, suitable for weaving through crowds; while Tricksters possess a strong charged shield and dodge-based defense, and have extremely high immunity to time dilation and slowing mechanisms.
Finally, you can also use Tattoo rewards to replace or enhance your Passive Tree. This build doesn't require basic attributes like Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence, so you can replace these passives with more valuable ones like +1% maximum elemental resistance, +8% skill range, and +5% movement speed.
If you don't have the corresponding Tattoos, you can also obtain them through Path of Exile Currency trade on the trading market.
Evaluation
From an overall gameplay perspective, Trial of the Ancestors has a clear duality.
On one hand, it offers a gameplay structure highly independent of traditional dungeon crawling systems, with outstanding tactical depth. Players need to plan long-term around NPC configurations and battlefield strategies, rather than simply relying on gear strength.
At the same time, the reward ceiling is high, especially Tattoo system, which has strong trading value, and the overall content offers good re-playability.
On the other hand, this gameplay also has obvious shortcomings, such as relatively low returns in the early stages, a slow growth curve, a high requirement for understanding the mechanics, and a considerable amount of time for beginners to adapt to its unique rules.
Furthermore, before reaching the high-yield phase, there's a tendency to invest a lot of time but receive less than ideal returns, leading to a period of inefficiency.
At the official mechanism level, based on PoE Patch 3.28 and subsequent public information, Trial of the Ancestors is a limited-time alliance mechanism. Its core gameplay structure, including tournament-style battles, NPC faction system, and Tattoo reward system, has not undergone fundamental rework, and the overall framework remains stable.
However, it's important to note that different alliance environments or special event versions may adjust values, drop rates, or NPC strength. Therefore, the experience will vary depending on the environment, but the underlying mechanism logic usually remains unchanged.
In summary, the essence of Trial of the Ancestors is not about traditional monster-killing efficiency, but rather about the strategic gameplay surrounding team building, battlefield control, and NPC cooperation. It expands Path of Exile beyond a damage-focused ARPG into a gameplay dimension that prioritizes tactical planning and situational control.
